What do you mean by HVAC repair?

One company for the whole home system

HVAC stands for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning. When we say “HVAC repair,” we mean fixing the systems that keep your home warm, cool, and dry — and the water heater that keeps your showers hot. If any part of it stops working, we’re the ones to call.

Heating

Furnaces and boilers. No heat, short-cycling, strange smells, or a system that won’t start — we diagnose and repair all of it.

Cooling

Central AC and heat pumps. No cool air, weak airflow, icing, or a unit that runs non-stop — we find the cause and fix it.

Water heating

Water heaters — tank and tankless. No hot water, leaks, rumbling, or pilot problems, diagnosed on the spot.

Ductwork & ventilation

Hot and cold rooms, noisy ducts, and airflow problems. We check the ductwork, filters, and vents as part of every diagnosis.

How A-1 approaches a repair

01

Diagnose

We test the system properly — controls, airflow, refrigerant, gas, and electrical — until we can point to the failed part.

02

Flat-rate repair

If the fix needs parts or more time, you get one flat price for the whole repair. You approve the exact total before we start.

03

Fix what’s broken

We repair the actual problem — not just the symptom — with quality parts, then test the full cycle.

04

Prevent repeats

We tell you what caused it and what to watch for, so the same failure doesn’t come back next season.

Common HVAC problems we fix

Tap your symptom for the quick checks to try first — and what we do if the checks don’t bring your system back.

System won’t turn on

What’s it most likely to be? Thermostat issue, tripped breaker, tripped float switch, or a dead blower.

  • Check your thermostat: is it set correctly, and does it have fresh batteries (if it takes them)?
  • Check your breaker panel: has the breaker for your furnace or AC tripped?
  • Check the float switch: if the drain pan is full, a float switch may have shut the system down.
  • Still nothing? Don’t open panels or probe wires — call us.
No heat

What’s it most likely to be? Thermostat setting, clogged filter, ignition failure, or a safety lockout.

  • Check your thermostat: set to Heat, set temperature above the room’s current temperature.
  • Check your filter: a clogged filter can cause overheating and shutdowns.
  • Check your breaker and the furnace’s service switch: is it on?
  • Is the pilot lit (if gas)? If the ignition is failing, shut the system down and call us.
  • If the system is short-cycling or making a loud sound, shut it off — that’s a job for a Tech.
No cooling

What’s it most likely to be? Thermostat set wrong, clogged filter, blocked outdoor coil, or a frozen coil.

  • Check your thermostat: is it set to Cool, set lower than the room’s temperature?
  • Check your filter: a clogged filter blocks airflow and can freeze the coil.
  • Check the outdoor unit: grass, leaves, or debris blocking airflow.
  • Check for ice on the lines or coil: shut the system down and let it thaw, then check the filter.
  • Still warm? Book a $180 service call — low refrigerant or a failing compressor are jobs for a tech.
Weak airflow

What’s it most likely to be? Clogged filter, duct leak, blocked vent, or a blower problem.

  • Check your filter: clogged or overdue — replace it.
  • Check your vents: are enough open, and are any blocked?
  • Listen for the blower: if it hums but doesn’t move air, shut the system off and call us.

Rooms that are always too hot or too cold while others are fine usually point to duct or airflow issues — we check those in the diagnosis.

Unusual noises

What’s it most likely to be? A grinding, squealing, or buzzing sound usually points to a motor, belt, or electrical component failing.

  • Note what it sounds like and where it’s coming from — inside or outside.
  • Is it on start-up only, while running, or when it cycles off?

What we do next: If the system is grinding or making loud noises, shut it down and call us — we’ll get it fixed before a small part turns into a big one.

Cycling on and off

What’s it most likely to be? Short cycling — a clogged filter, blocked return vent, or low refrigerant.

  • Check your filter: clogged or overdue — replace it.
  • Check for blocked return vents or a blocked outdoor unit.
  • Listen for any unusual sounds when the system cycles — grinding, banging, or a loud hum.

What we do next: Don’t ignore short cycling. Book a $180 visit and we’ll find the cause — it stresses the compressor.

Thermostat problems

What’s it most likely to be? Thermostat issue, dead batteries, loose wires, or a bad control board.

  • Check your thermostat batteries, Heat/Cool setting, and set temperature.
  • Check your breaker: has the breaker for your system tripped?
  • Check that the thermostat isn’t in a dead zone — if the system has a zone controller, check the zone damper.

What we do next: If the thermostat checks out but the system still does the wrong thing, it’s time for a service call.

Safety first: If you smell gas at any time, do not try to find or fix the source. Turn the gas off to the furnace with the shut-off valve going to it, or get out of the building and call 911 or the gas emergency line from outside, depending on how strong it smells. If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, get out of the building and call 911 or the fire department from outside.
Pricing

What’s included in a $180 service call?

Flat $180 for the first hour — travel and diagnosis included. If the repair needs parts or more time, we quote the full repair price before any work happens. No open-ended hourly bill, no parts installed without your OK. There is no credit card fee on the $180 amount.

01

Diagnose

We test the system properly — controls, airflow, refrigerant, gas, and electrical — until we find the real cause.

02

Flat-rate repair

If the fix needs parts or more time, you get one flat price for the whole repair — the $180 service call is included in that total. You approve the exact total first.

03

Fix what’s broken

We repair the actual problem with quality parts, then run a full heating or cooling cycle to confirm it’s fixed.

04

Prevent repeats

We tell you what caused the failure and what to watch for — and whether a tune-up is due.

Repair or replace?

It depends on three things: system age, condition, and repair history. If your furnace or AC is over 10 years old and the repair is expensive, replacing can save money over the next several years — but many older systems are still worth fixing. Our rule of thumb: if the repair makes sense for the age and condition of your system, we repair it. If you’re better off replacing it, we’ll tell you why and quote it separately. No pressure, no sales pitch — just an honest answer.

Common questions about HVAC repair

How much does an HVAC service call cost?

It’s $180 flat for the first hour, travel included. We diagnose and quote your repair’s full cost before doing any work — “total price of $X” — so you’re not surprised at the end.

How do you charge for a repair?

We charge the $180 service call for the first hour. After that, repairs are quoted as one flat rate — parts plus labor — not by the hour. We’ll explain the options before starting work.

Do you repair systems 24/7?

Yes, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Emergency service is $285 minimum for the first hour — the extra cost reflects our on-call availability outside regular hours.

What areas do you service?

We’re based in Grand Rapids, MI and serve Kent County and surrounding areas — about a 50-mile radius. If you’re outside that, call us — we’ll tell you honestly whether we can make it, or refer you to a reputable alternative.

What can I check before I call?

Your thermostat setting, filter condition, and breaker panel — these are the most common causes of an HVAC problem. Also try the system’s reset button if you can find it. We include a full checklist in our service guide on this page.

Is there a right time to book?

Call or text (616) 243-1914, or book with the form above — the form holds your time while you pay $180, and we confirm within business hours. If it’s an emergency, please call rather than using the form.

Can I cancel a visit?

Yes. Call or text (616) 243-1914 up to 3 hours before your visit to cancel for a full refund (minus credit card transaction fees, if any). If you give less than 3 hours’ notice, the refund is 50% of the service call fee. No-shows are not refunded.
